Yes, even nearly-25 year olds have dilemmas they need to discuss on the internet

Greets all.
I'm Luke and I'm an alco... wait, wrong group... crap.
*clears throat*
So I've been seriously considering study this year. Infact I've made my mind up pretty much and I'm heading back to the world of wedgies and textbooks in July. At least this was the plan.
1) Study
2) ????
3) PROFIT!
For about a month -due to a number of things going on and changing and so on, I've been wondering if this is truly 'the year' to do it. Or whether I should save my pennies and do something else, maybe travel? Move somewhere else so I'm not living in the sticks? Work on my own projects before I commit to a course where I'll have to play nice with others?
For those who don't know me very well. Finding a career I liked, as opposed to "just a job" has been a rough ride. I'm talking like, "raped by a horse wearing a sandpaper condom" rough. I've changed my aspirations as much as my underwear (and thats NOT once a month, thankyou very much! :P) and I've had a lot of hangups and issues about it as a result. I feel inadequate compared to a lot of people because I didn't go to college/uni/TAFE, purely because seemingly every man and their dog has and it really doesn't feel like I've achieved anything productive. Couple that with paranoia that I'm sure is nearing "eating disorder development" levels and you can imagine how I feel about myself half the time.
Trouble is, there's nothing in the 'real world' I particularly want to do, or would enjoy doing and the only reason I've been stuck at my current job so long is because I didn't want to risk being out of work. Only now have I decided what to do and now I'm... I guess not so much having "second thoughts" about the process itself, but having "second thoughts" about when to do it.
So.. I ask you, what would you do in my situation? Study and get it over with? or faff about for another year and see where it goes?

Become an hero? Oh wait, there is probably a rule in the forum against saying that, and i do not wish to be banned.
What is it that you have found that you want to do? Also, studying doesn't guarantee that you will succeed any better than without studying. See the world. Best thing ever

I'm going to film school. I'm aware it won't guarantee much, but it's a foot in the door, plus a chance to network and meet new people.

Hmm, my advice to you is to join a theatre, A voluntary fringe theatre. That's what i did, and it has created so many opportunities for me. I plan to make a thread about this sometime, so maybe a bit more details then. But yea, amateur theatre is another good place to get your foot in a door

I've done some work in amateur theatre while in high school. Certainly considered going back, but alas, lost a lot of contacts from the theatre group over the years.
I've also been doing a fair bit of script writing and jotting down ideas and stuff. Enough to wing it if I don't get in or I change my mind. Also, the course isn't that long (two years), so it's not like I'm throwing my life away on a course I might not like.

My advice would be not to get into the mind of "I'll give it another year and then see what happens" because you'll find that you've been saying that for 5 years and it's not going to change.
I'm still studying and I'm write in saying that I'm only a few months younger than you. I do teach but it has taken me a long time to get here and even then it will not be certain.
A good job is not always one that you love doing. A good job is having a good management and colleagues that make the day fantastic. My job in retail was crap but thanks to the people I worked with, I enjoyed going to work.
It could be possible that you are keeping fears in your brain from past experiences and that is what is stopping you from achieving more. You need to build yourself up and not think about the ifs or buts in the world and take that risk that will make you go "I am "ahem" fantastic and you better know it!"
Education is a good change, and it could do you good.

No real update. Still tossing up whether to study or not (though given current circumstances in my personal life, am leaning towards "study".), been doing a lot of work on my current project.

Well Luke, to be honest my life and yours seem to be almost identical. I have been throwing the idea of college about for years and have went through some very diverse choices on what I'd like to do there.. Japanese/Business, Nursing, Nutrition, Psychology, Philosophy, Acting and Even Motorcycle Maintenance to name but a few. I now know if I had went for any of them i would have dropped out after a year or less. These days I'm playing with the idea of Journalism or some sort of "Art". Sign up is in the next month and i still don't know. The only thing i have learned over the 5 or so years I've been toying with ideas is not what i want to do, but what i don't want to do... and the necessary BS of flip-flopping with ideas has been a blessing (for want of a better word) Now i just spend most of my time doing stuff i want, like writing music, fiction, recording sketches and funny stuff, Philosophy classes in the evening once a week(non-certified after a term) and am going into Creative Writing in the next month or so. For a while i was worried about being one of the few who didn't bother with college when school finished. I don't think I'll be happy learning business, law or some other BS that leads to tapping people's veins for money just for the sake of earning a piece of paper so that i feel less inadequate. As far a s i know, the majority of people hate what they do for a living, career or otherwise. I'd say if you have a passion, just try a taster and see if it has any staying power attached to it, if not, just throw it in the recycle bin. just enjoy what you actually want to do when you're doing it. In fairness, you probably won't listen to anyone's advice on it anyway but i guess my main point is, even if you don't come to a decision to commit, it's not the end of the world. Be guaranteed there's at least 1 other person, a 28 year old Irish bloke who finds it all just as frustrating.
TL;DR
Don't busy yourself doing something you think you should for the sake of it. I'm sure, eventually, it'll come to you

Thanks mate. and yes, knowing someone's going through the same trials I am is rather refreshing.
Doing the course I have in mind is not really "for the sake of it" now. Because I know I'll get something out of it at the end of the day, and the course isn't that long when it comes down to it. It falls down to a matter of "when" and "am I ready?"
Like I alluded to before, part of me feels really left behind because up until now I haven't considered study. There's not a terrible lot I'm interested in in terms of a 'real' job and while I certainly understand that you need to work even if you hate it, I can't be at the same job I am now for the rest of my life. Just the thought of it makes me cringe.

At least you're making your decisions based on wanting to be happy in life, rather than wanting a job that pays the most/feeds you.
Make sure you most any cool films you make
And I'll see your name when you're a famous director I guess!
